Boy power

November 28, 2007

Aiden’s Christmas/6 month portraits are scheduled for this Saturday, so I went out shopping today for an outfit for him to wear.  My mom and sister went along to help me pick out something cute.  Along the way, we realized an important fact:  our boys are really getting the shaft!

In every single store we checked out, there were racks upon racks of cute little Christmas dresses and outfits for girls.  Every size, style, color you could wish for.  Then, off in a corner, there might be one small rack of dressy boys’ clothing, which of course was thoroughly picked over.  A couple of measly Christmas sweaters or little blazers.  And when you manage to pick a favorite from the three styles offered, there isn’t anything in the size you need.

Have you noticed that there are so many cute clothes for girls, and major quantities of them, too?  But for boys, everything is either some variation of jeans or superhero-themed.  Sorry, I don’t feel like putting my son in Spiderman pajamas for his Christmas photo.

We did manage to find a cute little shirt/vest/pants combo that will be quite adorable.  But then we made the mistake of looking for some shoes or slippers to go with the black pants we purchased.  HA!  You can find adorable dressy shoes for little girls as young as newborns, for goodness sakes.  Ballet slippers, patent leather, mary janes, whatever you want.  But I couldn’t find a single pair of black slippers or shoes for a six month old boy, and we went everywhere.  We couldn’t even find black socks anywhere, until we went to Tar.get.  I finally settled on the socks, since I’m not interested in hauling my ass all over the place just for a stupid pair of shoes.  But, damn!  Boys really aren’t given the same treatment when it comes to cute clothing options, are they?

Okay, rant over.

And also, I had better have a girl someday so I can indulge in some of those dresses.  Cuuuuuute.  But my boy is gonna be so adorable in his ensemble on Saturday.  :)

No pics of the outfit? I just posted a couple of Lovey’s Christmas pics.

Yes, it’s true girls get the best baby clothes (and the most choices.) It makes me want to have another girl so I can reuse all these adorable clothes!!!

You are so right! I have a boy and 2 girls and the clothes/shoes for girls are just so much cuter and more fun. Enjoy the time you have to put Aiden in cute sweaters, pants, etc. My 11 year old son wears nothing but jeans, t-shirts and fleece. No adorable sweaters for him! Try Olive Juice or Mini-Boden (both online) for adorable baby boy clothes. We can’t wait to see the photos!

I realize this too everytime I go shopping. I am lucky to have a girl.. until she wants to date! :)

It does suck that boys don’t get much in the way of choice for clothes. I always HATED shopping for my nephew. Still do. My daughter? I went to Babies R Us for her Christmas outfit and spent $190 on clothes. It’s entirely too easy.

Being a mom of girls, I definitely realized this. Especially when I go to look for something for one of my friends kids, who are all boys. I think it’s because they know that girls like clothes more than boys do.

That’s silly because I actually think that dressed-up little boys are cuter than dressed up little girls! I think maybe because boys’ dressy clothing is like miniature suits, where girls’ dressy clothing is definitely childlike.

I feel ya. I just went looking for a few things because Oliver is outgrowing everything so quickly, and there were six racks of ’sale’ clothing for babies and toddlers–and FIVE of those racks were just for girls! And I get so mad about shoes. There are hardly any choices for toddler boys. Those companies are missing out on some serious business…

My mom says my younger brother had MORE clothing when he was little than any of her three girls—she needed more clothing for him because she was changing him two or three times a day, since he was constantly playing outside and getting his stuff muddy, stained, ripped, wet, or whatever. And I’m foreseeing the same situation with my own son! I just wish there were more options!

    I KNOW!!

What I hate the most is that I can’t find black clothes for Babboo. So I’m forced to buy him black tee’s in the girls section. Tell me what makes a plain black shirt “girls”? I don’t get it.
