stair master
January 24, 2008
No, I’m not about to write about my forays into exercising. Because let’s be honest. I am a lazy woman who would prefer to eat instead of workout. This does not mesh well with the new tankini I purchased for our upcoming cruise, a tankini that arrived yesterday and will promptly be returned. I guess I don’t look terrible, but I’m needing to lose some weight. Oh well, that’s another post for another time.
The real meaning behind that title? AIDEN IS CLIMBING STAIRS. You read that right. The child is just climbing up the entire flight of stairs with no issues whatsoever. Yesterday I watched him climb up the first step and I thought, “Oh, I wonder how long it will take him to master this?” Answer? Within 5 minutes he was up the steps and on our second floor. Shit. And also, holy hell, am I in trouble! I did take pics, but of course they are still on my camera. What? Don’t give me that look! I’m too busy corralling this child and keeping him off the steps to bother uploading photos to my computer right now!
I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that he’s doing this, as it seems Aiden has always accomplished physical tasks early and quickly. I just never figured my kid would be crawling, standing up, and CLIMBING the steps before he’s even eight months old! Of course, he isn’t fast at everything. I’ve been a little worried because he isn’t talking a lot. Sure, he squeals and makes noise and blows raspberries, but he isn’t actually babbling. No “mama” or “baba” or “dada.” In fact, he doesn’t even really say “ma” or “da” or “ba.” I suppose I shouldn’t worry too much, because he is incredibly happy and engaged with us. He loves to mimic us when we stick out our tongues or open and shut our mouths, so I suppose mimicking our speech isn’t too far off.
Still, kid, I wish you’d chill out with the physical stuff for a little while and just focus on the verbal skills for now! Your obsessive compulsive (worrying) mother would thank you. And she’d love if we could just sit still for a while and talk. ![]()

holy hell is RIGHT! girl, you better get yourself some gates!
language comes in a big burst. from our experience, i think henry was almost a year before he said ‘dada’– but we always spoke ‘real’ words with him. we called it a bottle and not a ‘baba’, so i think that was part of it. but no worries, your little guy will be running and talking and you’ll find yourself *wishing* for those quieter, slower times.

Gates are awesome!! Sherman wasn’t quite that fast with the climbing, but he was always ahead of schedule on physical milestones. He’s 21 months and just starting to talk and it is a very slow process. Most pediatricians don’t even begin to worry about language delays until 18 months so you have another year to relax. It’s hard when you are reading these blogs (especially about toddler girls) when they kids seem to talk in complete paragraphs but Aiden sounds normal to me.

Morgan was a master of physical stuff early and not so much with the words. Hell, I had her evaluated in December as I was convinced she had this huge delay. She has a very minor delay (range is 85-115 and she came in at 81). The therapist told me that if a child excels in one area, the brain is often too focused on that to focus on other areas. Case in point? A friend has a son two months younger than Morgan. His vocab (he’s not even two) is HUGE–well over 200 words. He JUST learned how to climb onto the furniture, jump with both feet coming off the ground, etc.
Anything you read about language development is a basic guideline. Sure, if he’s two and either not speaking or has two words, get him checked out. But, Kel, he’s 8 months old. Don’t panic yet. Seriously. I know it’s hard, but you can’t be worried about it. Give him a year and you’ll be silently thinking “SHUSH already–my head hurts!!”
It’s all good. Really. I wouldn’t lie to you.

Look at that boy go! I’m sure it’s challenging for now, but once he’s a… world-class mountain climber? rope-climb champion? American Gladiator?… you’ll say it was all worth it!
