V is for Vomit
March 6, 2008
*Do yourself a favor and don’t read this while eating or if you have a weak stomach*
Looking back, I was really setting myself up for it. Karma’s a bitch, you know. Aiden’s 9 month checkup was yesterday afternoon, and everything was great. 29.5 inches, 22 lbs, 6 ounces. He’s a big, strong, healthy boy. Then our pediatrician asked if Aiden’s been sick at all, to which I proudly replied, “Nope, other than a runny nose/cold back when he was very young. He’s never thrown up or had a fever or anything.” I say “proudly” because I like to think that my nursing helps protect him from illnesses.
Well, I should have knocked on wood or something when I made that cocky declaration at the doctor’s office. Because 3 hours later, Aiden was projectile vomiting all over the place. Of course, it had to happen while I was visiting my parents for dinner. The baby started to barf and he kept a steady pace of upchucking every 20 minutes. I then had to drive home (a 40 minute trip) and thank god he only threw up once during the ride.
But it just gets better. Did I mention that my huz is out of town right now? That means I was all alone for last night’s barf-a-thon. And it might not have been too bad, if I didn’t start to vomit myself.
Yeah, whatever Aiden has, I got it bad, too. I had managed to get him to sleep and I got to bed around midnight. By 2 a.m., I was hanging over the toilet. That woke up Aiden, so I went and got him from his crib and started rocking him.
Then… I realized I was going to vomit again. Knowing that I didn’t have much time, I sank to the floor, sat the baby next to me, and had my way with a plastic trashcan. The best part of this?? EVERY TIME I BARFED, THE BABY LAUGHED HYSTERICALLY. He thinks it’s funny when you cough or sneeze, so apparently violent dry heaves are fucking hilarious. Child, you will never live this down.
Things were better today. Although we had some… messy episodes… this morning, Aiden has been keeping everything down since early afternoon. I feel like I was hit by a truck, and I can’t wait for Jason to get home tomorrow (take your child now while I submerge in a scalding bath!) Thank goodness for my wonderful mom, who came up to watch the baby and let me nap a bit and get some rest. She saved me today.
I’m off to try and figure out new ways to entertain my little guy. I wonder what might make him happier… if I howl while burning myself or scream while falling down the steps? Whatever happened to pleasing this kid with some good ol’ fashioned peek-a-boo?

oh MAN. I’m so sorry! Maggie and I both had a stomach bug back in the summer at the same time (except we weren’t vomitting… it was going the other way, heh) It was NOT FUN. Having a sick kid is one thing- being sick yourself at the same time just adds a whole new level of Suckyness. Feel better soon!!!

I know EXACTLY how you felt. I am so sorry you and Aiden caught this. It is pure hell. Just when I thought we felt better, it hit us again. It took us a full week to recover and start eating again. The diapers….whoa. And, that’s the only time Lovey (she’s 13 months, where has the past year gone) has been sick other than a runny nose or two, also (though she was a Similac baby
) Talk about horrible, seeing your baby heave and then puke, follwed by cries cause she doesn’t know what just happened. Breaks a mama’s heart to pieces. And I can relate to the hubby not being around when the baby’s sick. His work schedule is not exactly traditional. Hope you and Aidan feel better soon. I really do.

oh WOW!! I don’t know what would have happened if Chad had been gone when we went through that! Although, he probably wouldn’t have gotten it!
And I’m sorry that I laughed at the part where you talk about how he laughed every time you vomited… but I can totally see my little girl loving it if I’d barf for her! But just to find out for sure, I’ll make barf noised tomorrow to see what kind of reaction I get!
Hope you feel better soon!

You poor thing! We had the same problem in January — the Peach brought home some sort of Norwalk-like virus and projectile vomited. Then it hit Matthew, and then it hit me. I’ve never felt so crappy in my whole life (not even when I was hospitalized with food poisoning). Taking care of a baby when you’re sick is probably the only thing worse than being sick.
Love Aiden’s Schadenfreude!!!

Dude, that is serious karma. It wasn’t even a whole day later.
The only time we’ve had actual honest-to-goodness vomit (not spitup) is when E was 15 months old and J was also out of town. Holy mackerel. I took him to the weekend pediatrician (luckily no puke in the car), had a horrible experience trying to fill out new patient paperwork with a sleepy, feverish toddler in my arms, and ended it all with bursting into tears in the aisle of CVS after E puked when I was trying to buy Pedialyte. How do single parents do it?

Oh yeah . . . the entire family stomach bug! LOVE that one. I find that hacking off individual toes makes my baby particularly happy.
Oh, and my kid just barfed yesterday . . . apparently he crammed his fist so far down his throat that he gagged and barfed all over the place. MENSA will not be calling us any time soon.

Oh I’m so sorry! I remember this from when my babies were babies. It’s the worst.
(It may be BETTER that your huz wasn’t home. B/c then HE would have gotten it too and (if he’s like most husbands) he would have been worse than the baby!
Hope you’re feeling better soon.

I feel really really awful for laughing about that! Aiden laughing while you puke! I am sorry, but that was hilarious!
I hope you two are feeling better now!
