Hair Monday (and a challenge to my lurkers!)

May 12, 2008

Ok.  I need a haircut.  I thought I was going to like having super-long hair, but I’m sort of underwhelmed.  Especially since I saw pics of myself from Mother’s Day.  Can you say “shaggy dog?”  That’d be me.

I have an appointment to get my hair cut this Wednesday, but I have no idea what to tell the stylist.  Complicating matters is that I have an upcoming screen test (squee!!) for a freelance news anchoring job.  I don’t want to look bad for that, with some shitty new haircut.  But anything would be better than the mop of hair I am currently sporting.

I’d also looooove to try something new.   Here’s what you should know:  for the past 10 years, I’ve had virtually the same haircut.  Sure, it was sometimes longer, sometimes shorter.  But essentially it hasn’t changed.  And I am boooorrrreeedddd.

Me, just recently.

Me, last fall.  I should note this was right after a haircut and I was not able to make the bangs look this good on my own.

Unfortunately, the wait list to do Whoorl’s Hair Thursday is probably a gazillion years long.  And I only have until Wednesday to make a decision.  Here’s where you come in.  I need you to help me decide!

FACTS:

  • My hair is super duper THICK.  I mean really thick.
  • It’s basically straight, but if I let it air dry there are some funky looking waves in it that I hate.
  • I have a roundish face.
  • I’ve never had a short haircut, even though I would love to see what I look like with one.  I’ve always been too scared, especially because of the round face issue.

Here are your options:

Option 1: The Pob.  Even though it’s so 2007, I still think it would be fun to try this cut. I might opt for just a little longer hair in the front.

Option B:  Less is Moore. I love, love, love this hair.  But would it look good on me?  I have no idea.  And I’m terrified to try.  But if you all think it might look cool, then I’d go for it, for better or for worse.

Option C: The Jessica.  This style is most similar to the look I’ve had during my years of TV news.  I like the blunt cut on the ends, and the bangs are cute.  I put this as an option because I like it, and you can’t deny tried-and-true.  Even if it bores the crap out of me sometimes.

Option D:  The Aniston Bob.  I like the blunt cut, and the smoothness.  Sort of boring and predictable, but it would be a cute change without going all crazy with the Pob or the super short Mandy Moore style.

Option E:  Tiffani-Amber with bangs.  I am sort of MEH about bangs, but these are cute.  And maybe if I got bangs and some layers I could make my long hair look better-styled.  Not too sure how my round lil face would look with bangs though.

So, VOTE!  And a special note to you who just lurk here and never comment… my stats say hundreds of people visit each day, so I know you are out there!  Do me a favor and just click on the poll to vote.  And if you are feeling really nice, leave a comment!

Click below to vote (the damn widget isn’t posting properly)  Thanks!

Hi! I’m delurking to say that I love your blog, and that I am doing the W.W. thing too! I love W.W. - keep up the great work! Also, I love the Jessica Simpson hair, and am now inspired to try something new…

  • 2. Adina  |  May 12, 2008 at 4:39 pm

So - here’s my two cents:
A & B - Although I would love to see you with short hair - warning…from experience I have found that with short hair cuts you HAVE to style them - so keep that in mind. (Can I tell you how scary I look when I roll out of bed and run to the gym in the morning…let’s just say I am glad I am the only one there!)
I vote for E - think it will look cute styled or air dried. Get some longer layers, so you can pull it back in a pony tail.
Can’t wait to see what you decide :)

I have hair very similar to option B and while cute, it must be styled every day. Probably not ideal when you have a little one, thus I am growing mine out in anticipation of my wee one’s arrival in November.

I’d go with option D. It’s just enough change to notice but not so much that you’ll start crying.

I’m waiting to see how everyone votes. We seem to have the same type hair. And I need a haircut too.

  • 5. Shelley  |  May 12, 2008 at 6:37 pm

Option B looks like a lot of work. I went Pob a couple of months ago, and have NEVER had so many hair compliments! Go Option A!

  • 6. the ambitious mrs  |  May 12, 2008 at 7:45 pm

Okay I voted for A and here is why. I think people with very thick hair look great with the angled bob look. If you get it cut so that you have it all stacked up in back it’s very dramatic and cook looking. Good luck! I constantly want to change my hair, that’s why I have short hair now!

    D!

It’s not as severe as the POB….looks a bit more laid back and friendly. I like D!! :D

  • 8. Jen  |  May 12, 2008 at 8:20 pm

I voted for D, but I also think B would be so cute on you. I can’t wait to see what you choose :) :) :)

  • 9. Kellie  |  May 12, 2008 at 9:27 pm

I voted for B. But, after I voted, I decided I didn’t like that vote. it does look cute and I think it would look great on you, but as others have said, it will require SOMETHING to be done with everyday.

So, go for A or D.

I’m such a big help, huh?

Regardless of which one you go with, I know it’ll look great on you!!

B! or D, but you might have too much hair for that. You’d need some serious texturizing, as whoorl would say!

  • 11. Kyleen  |  May 12, 2008 at 9:45 pm

So I’d go with D (and yes I voted) with your hair being thick you may have to ask them to run the razor through it to get some of the thickness out. My hair is super thick and I have a shorter bob and I like the wash, blow dry and go aspect of it. I call it my mommy cut. I got it right before my son was born and love it. So..I think D - I’d say you have too much hair for the mandy cut…plus you may need more body to achieve her J.B.F. (acronym for Just Been F@%!ed) look.

I voted for the Jessica but also liked Tiffani Amber Thiessen. The only thing to keep in mind is what will be easiest with a little one. I love to try new hairstyles but tend to go with the long layered look. The bright side is if you get it cut and don’t like it then it will grow back. The fact that you have thick hair is a plus to any hairstyle, I think. Can’t wait to see what you decide.

I literally took in the same picture of Jessica Simpson like a year ago to show my hair stylist and I LOVED it! There’s my two cents haha. I also really like Victoria’s haircut. My best friend got that haircut when she was about 5 months pregnant and she looked hot. Not that pregnancy is the reason you should get that haircut, but my friend had that pregnancy glow and then she got the haircut and it just made her glow even….more, hehe. I’d say A or C, but Mandy Moore’s haircut is also cute!

  • 14. Frema  |  May 13, 2008 at 8:50 am

My favorite is B! Since it sounds like you blow out your hair every morning, you already have the patience to keep up with a shorter cut. I think it would look great on you!

  • 15. andrea  |  May 13, 2008 at 10:11 am

I went for c and d. Both let you keep enough length that you have some flexibility with what you can do with your hair. I am learning the hard way that short hair and a toddler with one on the way isn’t a great plan. Now I begin the painstaking process of re-growing my bangs.

Can’t wait to see what you end up with!

  • 16. Laurel  |  May 13, 2008 at 11:04 am

I would go for the Mandy Moore if you trust your stylist. I think it could look super cute on you, though it is a big, daring change!

  • 17. Jane  |  May 13, 2008 at 12:31 pm

B! B! B! B! B! In fact, I think you just helped me find the perfect haircut I’ve been looking for. And yeah, I’m a lurker…and proud of it!

  • 18. Gris  |  May 13, 2008 at 4:00 pm

I LOVE the Mandy Moore cut. If I could pull it off I would lop off my locks tomorrow. But like someone said earlier…you have to maintain short hair so be ready to put the time into it for styling.

Other than that, I vote for D or E.

  • 19. Claire  |  May 14, 2008 at 6:28 am

Well! I had the POB for a while BEFORE she actually got it - it looks good, but, let me tell you - it is not an easily manageable hairstyle - you need to style it every day to keep it looking good, and if you want to grow it out - it takes FOREVER. So, I would say no to A.
I have what you could call something similar to B right now - except mine has more length (just above my shoulders) but all shaggy round the top like B. It is OK, but again, its high maintenance to keep it looking nice.

I am cautious about big style changes,as well. I think maybe C or D would work well for you - just a little bit shorter, maybe ask for a few layers to be put in to get some texture into your hair, maybe even a few high/ low lights to make it look funkier! In my experience, colour change and texturing are a good way to try something different. Then, next time, if you like it, go a bit shorter!

If you do get a pob don’t get it so short in the back - I also think with a “round” face - your face isn’t that round (!!) you would need some kind of bangs. Hope this helps!! BTW… I am a semi-lurker! xxx

I voted for B, and I think it would look really cute on you. I also like the Jessica, though. It’s already Wednesday so you may already be at your appointment, but just wanted to vote anyways! Can’t wait to see what you picked!

Hi. Lurker here. I don’t mean to be, really, but I can never think of something funny/clever/profound to say in the comments, and I’m sure you’ve had enough of the “too funny!!” comment or the “LOL” or whatever. But hey! I’ve got something to say now! Yay!

I went with option D. It’s kind of similar to the “tried and true” and yet different enough to be well…different! But at the same time, close enough to the one you KNOW you’ve liked in the past so you won’t end up with the “surprise! it’s shitty! just in time for your interview!” hair cut.

Hopefully it’s good that I delurked and my comment helped (at least a little!). Love your blog!
